Part of what was both great and challenging about this project was working with current Calvin University students. Through coordination with Calvin University staff and faculty I (Andrew) was able to help organize a training session in advance of our first filming day. This gave several students the chance to get first hand experience in a live studio setting. During my college years I really appreciated all the chances I had to work both in the on campus studio and in studios while interning abroad. It was great to give back as an Alumni while working on a project whose subject matter I really care about. After our initial shoot days I returned to a different studio space to finish up a recordings on my own operating two cameras, multiple lights, and audio equipment on my own.
The videos were edited into three series. The first series was about capturing the welcoming nature and mission of the collaborative. This was the shortest of the video series’, designed as an introduction to the other two video series. It included a “Welcome” video from the collaboratives leaders and a “Mission” video that intentionally incorporated many of the different voices from the collaborative members.
The second focused on “Why I Care” was designed as short statements from each participant to give context to their full presentations and provide material for social media trailers. This was a really interesting way to get intimate with each participant in the collaborative and really give them an opportunity to share their personal passion for refugees and immigrants.
The third series of videos consisted of longer “TED” style talks. These ranged in length from 5-15 minutes and covered a wide range of topics. Topics included: “What are Your Biases?”, “Hospitality as Discovery”, and “Global Migration”. Guest included: Ambassador William J. Garvelink, Sarah Yore-Van Oosterhout, Esq., Educator & Collaborative Leader Tim Baldwin, and many more.
